Hong Kong singer Denise Ho declared that she is gay, during a gay pride parade in Hong Kong on Saturday, reported Hong Kong media.

Ho is the first mainstream female singer in Hong Kong to have come out of the closet.

“I am a ‘comrade’ (A Chinese slang word for “gay”)!” said Ho, whose sexual orientation has long been the subject of speculation.

“For many years, when I faced questions from the media, I always felt that sexual orientation is a personal matter, that there is no need to label yourself.

“But in 2012, I find that there is still discrimination, prejudice and one-sided opinions in society, so I feel that silence is no longer an option,” explained Ho, who drew thunderous applause from the crowd with her address.

There’s a ton of misinformation going around Tumblr on this, so I’m going to post some actual facts on the situation before I go to bed.

Tammy Baldwin was one of 184 cosponsors of H.R. 2015, the trans-inclusive version of ENDA which was put before Congress in 2007. Unfortunately, Barney Frank — the bill’s originating sponsor — unilaterally withdrew H.R. 2015 from consideration and replaced it with H.R. 3685, a “gays only” version of ENDA. Frank argued that cutting trans rights out of ENDA was politically necessary because trans rights were an extremist position which would endanger moderate Democrats in swing states, whereas gay rights were “politically realistic”.

Tammy Baldwin not only refused to cosponsor H.R. 3685, but threw Frank’s betrayal of trans people in his face by introducing an amendment which would have reintroduced trans rights to ENDA while it was on the House floor, effectively reversing Frank’s replacement of H.R. 2015 with H.R. 3685. Barney Frank killed Baldwin’s amendment by cashing in favors with Democratic Party leaders, who told Baldwin that they would only let her introduce the floor amendment if she agreed to withdraw it before an actual vote was called. This way she would get ten minutes of floor debate time to make a public case for trans rights, but they would not under any circumstances permit a vote on the amendment.

It is neither accurate nor fair to call Tammy Baldwin a transphobe for not being powerful enough to single-handedly secure trans inclusion in ENDA against the entire fucking establishment of the Democratic Party. She stuck her neck way, way out to go to bat for trans people over ENDA, and that was an extremely courageous thing to do considering that she was a relative nobody in Congress explicitly going toe-to-toe with one of the most powerful men in Washington.

Edit: Here’s more details, including direct citations, for those who insist on “skepticism”. Funny how none of those people were “skeptical” of badmouthing a woman in the first place…

This is the THOMAS page for H.R. 2015, the trans-inclusive version of ENDA with 178 cosponsors including Tammy Baldwin. If you look at the dates in the cosponsor list, you’ll notice that Baldwin is one of the “plank owner” cosponsors; her date of cosponsorship is 4/24/2007, the same day the bill was introduced.

This is the THOMAS page for H.R. 3685, the “gays only” version of ENDA with just 9 cosponsors not including Tammy Baldwin. If you look under the “Amendments” link on H.R. 3685, there are three amendments listed H.AMDT.884 (A003) is Tammy Baldwin’s amendment reintroducing trans rights to the bill. As you can see from the Status notes on that page, the Baldwin amendment was withdrawn without a vote precisely eleven minutes after it was introduced for consideration on the House floor.

If you’re unfamiliar with the formal procedures of the House of Representatives, there’s something called the Five-Minute Rule: when the House is meeting as the Committee of the Whole (i.e. the entire House as opposed to a single subcommittee), debate on any new floor amendment is automatically limited to ten minutes: five minutes by the proponent of the amendment, and five minutes by an opponent of the amendment. In practice, this rule can be sidestepped by other Congresspeople proposing nominal amendments to the amendment — the usual phrasing is “striking the last word” or “striking the requisite number of words” — and then yielding (i.e. officially transferring) the five minutes that their nominal amendment entitles them to over to the original proponent. Alternatively, the speaker’s five minutes can be extended by unanimous consent. Both of these extending maneuvers require support from the party leadership, and Tammy Baldwin didn’t have it.

The absolute most Baldwin could have done beyond what she actually did would have been to refuse to withdraw the bill and demand a formal vote on it, which would have been a futile gesture, and would have basically gotten her locked out by her own party in all future discussions. She was already going against the party line set by Barney in bringing the amendment at all, and without backup from other Congresspeople she was swinging in the wind.

Uh guys, [Tammy Baldwin’s] amendment was actually FOR including transgender rights in ENDA. She supported Barney Frank, who originally proposed the inclusive element. Check out this video of her proposal; she says it explicitly. However, she had to withdraw it. Admittedly the reasons for this were unclear to me. In the Transadvocate article, the writer stated that ENDA could lose protection for transgender individuals. Barney Frank brought the amendment up again (see below) and transgender individuals are protected under the bill.

So no, she’s not a transphobic lesbian throwing transgender people under the bus. She actually wants transgender rights included in the bill. Here is the opposition, which argues that the ENDA in total is against religious freedom.

The Ali Forney Center, the largest and most comprehensive LGBT homeless youth organization in the country, suffered a major loss due to Hurricane Sandy. Their drop-in center, which is a lifeline to kids who live on the streets, was destroyed.

Below is a letter from their executive director, Carl Siciliano, detailing the situation and how you can help. (Hint: they really need your money.)

This organization is near and dear to my heart, I’m on the Board of Directors and have produced The Broadway Beauty Pageant for them for many years. Please give what you can to this very important cause.

Dear Friends,

Yesterday we were finally able to inspect our drop-in center in Chelsea, half a block from the Hudson River. Our worst fears were realized; everything was destroyed and the space is uninhabitable. The water level went four feet high, destroying our phones, computers, refrigerator, food and supplies.

This is a terrible tragedy for the homeless LGBT youth we serve there. This space was dedicated to our most vulnerable kids, the thousands stranded on the streets without shelter, and was a place where they received food, showers, clothing, medical care, HIV testing and treatment, and mental health and substance abuse services. Basically a lifeline for LGBT kids whose lives are in danger.

We are currently scrambling for a plan to provide care to these desperate kids while we prepare to ultimately move into a larger space that will better meet our needs. The NYC LGBT Center has very kindly and generously offered to let us temporarily use some of their space, and we hope to determine the viability of that on Monday.

We have been deluged with kind offers from people who wish to volunteer and donate goods. Unfortunately, we will have to provide our services in the time being in much smaller spaces that won’t accommodate volunteers or allow for much storage space. It is heartbreaking to see this space come to such a sad end. For the past seven years it has been a place of refuge to thousands of kids reeling from being thrown away by their parents for being LGBT. Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of designing and illustrating the cover for Allison Moon’s lesbian werewolf book “Lunatic Fringe.” This was Allison’s first novel, she didn’t have a big budget (or any budget to speak of, actually) so I helped her out. Now she’s written a sequel, and she’s raising money to pay me and her editor, because we are awesome, and she can’t stand asking us to work for prunes again.

There are 23 more days to go to reach a $4,500 goal, help us out if you can!

WHERE THE MONEY GOES:

Funds from Allison’s Kickstarter will help her pay JP (that’s me!) illustrator/graphic designer ($1000) for a new, gorgeous cover, and Allison’s editor ($1000) for her shrewd eye and thoughtful analysis.

Additional funds will support the creation and shipping of merch, the setup and distribution of the paperback books, and help Allison finish the novel for its Spring release date. Self publishing is INSANE, it is beyond blood sweat and tears, and the amount Allison is asking for is pretty modest, compared to a normal book launch. I know her well and am confident that she’ll use funds wisely and stretch the dough to boost herself and the book with four times the amount of outreach and production that she was able to do on practically nothing! That’s why making her Kickstarter goal would be really really wonderful!

To the mormon lesbian: Hi, I was born and raised in the LDS church as well, and realized I liked girls when I was about 11 years old, but I didn't tell anyone that I was a lesbian until I was 18. In my experience, life after coming out has been so, so much easier. I really hope that your parents can find it in their hearts to be as accepting as mine have been. I know there isn't any insightful advice in this message, but I do have an idea of what you are going through. You're not alone.

Just two days after opening, BIENESTAR, a nonprofit organization providing services for LGBT and HIV-positive Latino/a communities in Southern California, was evicted from its new offices.

The organization began providing services in its new Van Nuys space on August 13. On the 14th, the landlord demanded the organization take its belongings and leave the premises, and he had the locks changed. On the 15th, the landlord told BIENESTAR he was terminating their lease because they were “bringing disease” to the building.

“We feel that we have been treated unfairly,” Oscar De La O, president and CEO of the organization, said in a press release. “The landlord’s actions are a shocking example of the kind of LGBT and HIV/AIDS discrimination that Bienestar has committed itself to fight against and overcome… This situation is very unexpected and distressing, especially when we have performed these same services half a block down the street from this Van Nuys location for 12 years. We have never faced this kind of situation before at any of our nine Southern California centers.”

Bienestar will offer limited services in Van Nuys from its mobile unit, currently located outside the organization’s former office at 14515 Hamlin St. Services, including case management, rapid HIV testing and referrals, will be available every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Can’t even put into words how furious this makes me. Holy cow. I don’t know if anything is being planned to retaliate against this landlord’s despicable actions, but feel free to keep an eye on the organization’s website for ways you can help.
